Music Magazine Covers.

Monday 26th November
LO: To create a music magazine cover showing understanding of representation.
WWW: Good coverlines
EBI: More colour

Ive shown that is a pop magazine genre by using other famous pop artists in the coverlines. The way Millie is dressed is the type of clothes that would be used and is a representation of the artist. It links to the target audience because the age range is about 16-30 and the celebrities are around that age.
What I think went well: The picture in the background.
What I think I need to improve on:
  1. I need more colours to make it more pop genre.
  2. The coverlines font should be different from the masthead.
DIRT

I added more colour to make the genre more pop and changed the masthead font to a different one from the coverlines.  I also moved around some of the layers on it to make it more organised. The masthead was also put more onto the left like other magazines are.

Cover Analysis

Thursday 16th November
LO: To analyse the cover of a magazine, linking it to Genre and Audience.

Baby boomer Generation- People born after WW2- so like 50 to 70 years old.
Diversification- The notion media companies expanding and branching out into different areas of the media industry. Varying more.
Audience Address- Talking directly to the Audience
Discerning- Having or showing good judgement
House Style- A company preferred manner of presentation and layout of written material. Like the colour palette, using the same masthead.
Intertextuality: Where one text refers to another different piece of media within

Shot type: Mid shot

  • They used a mid shot so that they could frame their celebritys face with enough room for the coverlines. They also used a mid shot as opposed to a close up so the CD doesn't cover his face.

Star Vehicle: Dave Grohl

  • As its a Modern Rock magazine, they used a very popular and well know rock artist.

Colour Palette:Blue/Yellow/Red/White/Black

  • The bright colours used makes the magazine eye catching and stand out to buyers. As its modern they've used a more variety of colours whereas with a classic rock it would be more black and greys. The bright colours connote to pure and happy things which sets the mood. They follow the codes and conventions of the genre.

Bands/Artists Mentioned:Nirvana/Teen Spirit/Elvis

  • They use well known artists and bands to pull in the readers. If they didn't know who they were going to read about, its unlikely they'd want to buy it. Artists like Elvis are known worldwide.

Masthead Style: Block capitals/Sans serif

  • The Block Capitals and bold writing make their masthead stand out, the white contrasts well with the background. The sans serif font shows its pure rock as theres no flicks or ticks, it also makes it look more masculine.

Main Coverline style: Capitals
Minor coverline style: Lowercase
Puff: Red circle-yellow writing- 159 Reviews
USP (Freebies)-Free Cd
Placement of text- Around his face mainly

Magazine Ownership and Regulation

13/11/17
L/o: Research ownership, regulation and institutions involved in music magazines.

The main institutions  (big publishing companies) that publish and distribute magazines in the UK

IPC Media: Uncut, NME

Bauer Media: Q magazine, Mojo, The box, Magic, Downtown, Country, 4 Music

CondÄ— Nast: Pitchfork

Immediate Media: Radiotimes

Hearst: No music magazines

BBC: Music, Top of the Pops

Magazine companies generate magazines and make profit by Sales and advertising. They don't get much from single sale copies- when people buy the magazine from a shop. They earn more from subscriptions because they don't have to pay the shops to advertise and sell their magazine.
They make their money by advertising artists tours, products and subscriptions. People have to pay to put advertisements in the magazine and it costs a lot. This also fills the magazine to the maximum so it looks better therefore sells better. They are funded by subscriptions. The advertisement is linked to the target audience as the institution knows where to make their money.

Ownership:
Conglomerates: Big Owners
The majority of magazines are published by nine companies but their titles make up nearly 75% of the market. This means they have a massive influence over audiences and their companies will only get bigger as they control most of the market.

Media Regulation and Law:
There is a certain code of conduct for TV and Films. BBFC regulate the film- tell them who they can show it to like the age rating.

Who are Ipso and what do they do?
Ipso means Independent Press Standard Organisation. They are the independent regulator for the magazine and newspaper industry in the UK. They Regulate over 1500 print magazines and 1100 Online. They take complaints and investigate them. They help with unwanted press attention or harassment concerns. They give Editors and journalists guidance and advice about the editors code.

Who are Impress and what do they do?
Impress is a regulator designed for the future of Media. They provide journalists and publishers with the protection and the support they need to do their job and speak with confidence and security. We provide the public with the reassurance that they can rely on the news sources that inform them, entertain them and represent their interests.

What rules do magazines have to follow?

The future of the magazine:
In the past 20 years, the magazine industry has changed by going digital. For production this means its quicker. its faster and more efficient so it costs less, after the initial cost of the technology they have to buy, they'll need less building space, less print.
Its impacted that less real magazines are being produced, smaller, more independent companies can make just as good digital copies. I think in the future there will be no real magazines being made as the world of technology is constantly improving.
