Representation Theory:
Butsch (1922)
Richard Butsch who says working class males in the media are presented as; "Incompetent and ineffectual, often a buffoon, well intentioned but dumb. In almost all working class series, the male is flawed, some more than others"
This means that working class males are not seen as not having any skill to do something successful, not having any desire effect and are seen as amusing. But they are seen as having flaws.
Hebdige (1988)--The Vamps and Little mix
Dick Hebdige argued youths are stereotyped as mixed metaphors of ;"Youth as fun" and "Youths as trouble makers" They are often represented as one of these two stereotypes.
This quote means that "youth" are only represented in two ways fun and a trouble maker.
Hall (1944)
Stanley Hall argues youths are "depressed" and are likely to seek excitement through: crime, sex, drink and drugs. Teens and young adults are often represented with these elements.
This quote means that "youth" are likely to be represented through crime, sex, drink and drugs because it gives them an escape from the real world.
Mackmillon (2002)
Mackmillon argues something slightly different: he says, "males are now shown as sexual objects of desire who are more concerned with image"
This means that males are shown as sexual objects and are only concerned on what they look like.
Gauntlett (2002)
Gauntlett argues males in the media still follow traditional stereotypes as they are shown as "alpha males who control the action with violence"
This quote means that males in the media are shown as "alpha males" and "control the action with violence".
Laura Mulvey (1975)--Little mix
Laura Mulvey argued women in the media are used as "Erotic objects of desire for males on screen and in the audience" She claims that female representations are created for the male gaze.
This quote means that women in the media are seen as sexual objects and are only created for the males to look at.
