Genre and Target Audience

16th October
L/o: To identify target audiences for a variety of music magazines genre.

Target Audience
Demographics:
I think the genre of this magazine is combined and Indie alternative genres to do with fashion films and entertainment. The age range is from 15-25. I think its more directed to females due to the fact that the main picture is of a girl. Also the colours are quite vibrant and bright. The nationality is British and I think the readers are A,B,C1 Class because of the Price. I think Clash has got a mass audience because the celebrities used are quite popular in this magazine and others.

Psychographics:
Employment status: Medium Income
Young and Rubicam: The succeeder - People who possess self confidence, have a strong goal of orientation and tend to be very organised.
Lifestyle category: Groupies- People who want to be accepted by the people around them.
Innovators- People who want to make their mark on the world.
Social value group: Innovators: Self confident risk takers, seeking new and different things, setting their own targets to achieve.

Thursday 2nd November
L/O:  To identify target audiences for a variety of music magazine genres

Demographics:
I think the genre could be pop because the celebrity featured is Calvin Harris who sings forms of Pop and also produces the songs. I think the age range is for Teens and Young adults like ages 16-25. I think it is aimed at Females because of the bright colours used like pink, yellow and white but using a male celebrity could also suggest that its aimed at Males. The nationality is British and i think Class A,B,C1 because of the price and contents.

Psychographics:
Employment status: Medium Income
Young and Rubicam: The Mainstream
Lifestyle category: Innovators
Social value group: Esteem Seekers

Demographics:
The genre of this magazine is definitely Rock, I know this because it says it and also the hints like the black and dark yellow colours. The skulls and symbols suggest it aswell as the bands/artists listed. I think the age range is adults like 24-35. I think its aimed at Males as the celebrity used is a male. I think its class C2,D,E.

Psychographics:
Employment status: Medium Income
Young and Rubicam: The explorer
Lifestyle category: Drifters and Rebels
Social value group: Innovators

Demographics:
The genre of this magazine is Rock, although I think its linked to pop because of the brighter colours used. Kerrang is a Rock magazine but uses less gothic colours like Hammer. I think the age range is around 16-24, the gender is more aimed at Males and its ethnicity is British. I think the class is C2,D,E because there is 10 posters inside meaning theres not much writing or articles included.

Psychographics:
Employment status: Medium Income
Young and Rubicam: The Aspirer
Lifestyle category: Groupies
Social value group:Strivers

Demographics:
This magazine is a pop magazine, i know this because its in the title and you can tell because of the artists used and the bright colours. I think the age range is from 15-20 and its directed at females. The Ethnicity is British and i think the class is lower like C2,D,E because of the price at only £1. Theres probably not very long articles because its quite a cheap magazine.

Psychographics:
Employment status: Low Income
Young and Rubicam: The aspirer
Lifestyle category: Traditionalists
Social value group: Self actualisers

Psychographics look at the lifestyles, behaviours, attitudes, interests and personality.

  • Race- Caucasian
  • Sexual Orientation- Heterosexual

Demographics are like the the facts and Psychographics are more about lifestyles.

Magazine reader profile:
Q readers are the ones that value their own independent judgement. As 40 year old Males, they're the Traditionalists, the Puritans, sometimes even the Rebels. They attach importance to Image and status, they are class A/B/C1 and are more often then not Caucasian, Heterosexual British Males like the artists.
They don't always follow the trend, it could be new or old music they like to listen to.

Magazine Cover Terminology, Layout and Analysis

2/10/17

  1. Mojo means a quality that attracts people to you and makes you successful and full of energy. This could mean that they think the quality of their magazine attracts people. It also means a magic spell. The billboard masthead means a large outdoor board that displays advertisements. Billboard also means charts in American which links to the music charts.
  2. They are laid out across the top in big writing with the celebrity's heads covering part of the word.
  3. The date, the name of the magazine, the name of the celebrity featured, the subheadings and the price of the magazine.
  4. In the mojo magazine I think the main headline is "The songs that saved his life Nirvana" In the billboard magazine there isn't a main headline because they're all the same size. That headline appeals to the target audience because everyone knows who David Grohl is so they would want to read about him. They also know he's from Foo Fighters so people can identify the genre.
  5.  In the Mojo magazine the types of coverlines are about rock artists and the ones in billboard are about pop artists like Taylor swift.
  6. In the mojo magazine the fonts are quite masculine, its all a sans serif font. The billboard magazine fonts are quite feminine, a serif font is used on the words katy perry for example.
  7. The graphics used are the pictures of the celebrities and the teen spirit one in the mojo magazine.
  8. The colours used are quite gender specific, In the mojo magazine, its quite masculine, blue and black colours. In the Billboard magazine its quite girly colours used like pink and yellow for the flowers and a pink background.
  9. There is more text on the mojo magazine, theres loads of coverlines and subtitles. This might be because rock appeals to an older target audience and they would prefer to read more. On the Billboard magazine theres not much writing and its all quite small. As its a pop magazine, the target audience is younger people so they wouldn't want as much writing and want more posters etc.
  10. On the Mojo magazine there is pictures of the celebrities. The non verbal communication is like the facial expressions, Dave Grohl looks quite moody but Katy perry looks more happier, I think this is because pop music is more upbeat and happy etc.
  11. The Mojo magazine is giving away a free CD maybe to promote the music and help sell the magazine.
  12. Theres no menu strip in either magazine, the menu strip is normally at the bottom and tells the reader a rough idea of whats included.
  13. In Mojo the genre is more rock and in Billboard the genre is pop music.
  14. Mojo I think appeals more to men because of the genre and colours used and Billboard is directed more to women because of the colours, the celebrity featured and the genre.
  15. Magazines appeal to their readers by writing what they want to read so the cover lines, they also appeal by the celebrities used and the look and layout of the cover.
  16. In mojo I think the unique selling point is the freebie it comes with and in Billboard the layout of the front.
