Stereotypes

Monday 11th December

Write down all the stereotypes you can think for:
Age- Vulnerable Old people, Moody teachers
Race/Ethnicity-Scottish, English, Gypsies, Indians, White and black caribbean, Pakistani.
Disability- Thought as Slow, Abnormal, Unable to communicate, Helpless, Incapable
Sexuality- Male, Female, Homosexual, Heterosexual

Exam style Question: Analyse how media language has been used to construct representation on the colour of Mojo and one other music magazine.

The magazine I'm analysing is a Mojo magazine, the target audience is around 25-45 men.
The masthead is big and bold and contrasts well with the blue background. It would attract the audience because its big, but the only problem is, half of it is covered. Its a masculine font because their is no flicks or ticks.
The colours used connote and link to male stereotypical colours like blue and black. This also links to the main image because he is a male. Yellow is also used to brighten it up to appeal to the readers and people buying the magazine.
I think the layout is quite cramped but this just shows that its packed with information and articles. The coverlines are layed out well around the main image and the free CD it comes with. It has high production values and is quite sophisticated which appeals to the older target audience.
The main image is of a famous singer from the band foo fighters called Dave Grohl. They used a medium she so they could fit the coverlines around him. He has quite a serious facial expression which would appeal to the people buying it as its sophisticated, He is wearing a plain black shirt which links to the genre rock. The only other image on the cover is the Cd and a small picture of someone singing n the top right corner.
All the coverlines include male names and most of them are well known. These interest the reader making them want to buy it. Each coverline reveals something about the story but not much, using people like Elvis would appeal more to the older generation as opposed to the younger one. They all use the same font but just in different sizes, the main coverline about Dave Grohl is the biggest.

The second magazine I'm analysing is a Pop magazine, the target audience is girls around the ages of 12-16.
The masthead is quite small on the left hand side and its say We love Pop. Its set out in a more younger audience appealing way with the speech box going around it and lots of pink. Instead of actually writing the love they used a heart instead. Making it look like almost a text message it connotes that its quite modernised and childish.
The main colours used is white and pink, white girly and bright colours. They link to the genre because pop is normally with girly. I don't think the pink contrasts well with the main image though because Rhianna has red hair so the red and pink clash.
The layout is quite cramped with all the coverlines and pictures. This might appeal to the audience because it shows theres a lot of content in it. I think its low production values as it looks not as sophisticated and expensive as other magazines.
The main image is a medium shot, it shows about half of Rhianna's body. This might appeal to the audience as they can see what she's wearing. Her facial expression is happy which links to the genre pop. There is quite a few minor images like a picture of one direction, the wanted and some outfit ideas. These also help to hook the readers in.
The main coverline is about Rhianna and is in a really big font and the smaller coverlines are arranged around her. They've got quotes and insider information that makes the reader want to read more.

Magazine covers analysis homework

Wednesday 6th December
L/O: On your blog choose two music magazine covers and explain how the cover star has been presented.

This magazine cover represents Katy Perry (The cover star), in a stereotypical female manner. This cover is trying to promote the Blender magazine by sexualising the celebrity. From the angle of where she is standing and the clothes she is wearing you can see that they are using the stereotype 'slut'. This shows women are represented in a degrading way compared to men in order to sell the product, however this is seen as normal that women present themselves explicitly. I think that this magazine in particular is aimed towards men because the way Katy Perry is presented and the way her hand is on her own body in a seductive way. Also the main cover-line about Katy says about kiss and tell which also links to the stereotype 'slut'.

In comparison to the previous Blender magazine, this photo presents a different view of women. This cover is trying to sell the Blender magazine. There is a suggestion of Female power as Taylor Swift cover line says "Radio Ruling" which means she's ruling the radio world. The clothes she is wearing are also not as explicit as Katy Perrys in the one above. The way she's standing suggests a more confident and Powerful person. Its anti stereotypical because it goes against the usual female stereotypes as she is presented as strong and more individual. This is also aimed at men but will also appeal more to women because of the way they have presented her.

This Rolling Stone magazine uses the cover star Justin Beiber to try and promote and sell itself. By using the half dressed famous singer, it automatically appeals to many women. This cover presents Justin stereo typically as a macho man. Like women, people use men to sell products and its seen as the normal. It connotes that is much easier to sell magazines if the cover star isn't dressed appropriately.

Mojo Cover:
Gender is represented on the Mojo cover by colour, its got a blue background which automatically suggests its a male characteristic. Dave Grohl looks serious which is also a gender stereotype, typically masculine. He has also got facial hair, the longer hair linking to the rock genre. All the artists mentioned on the front cover is male.

I have leant that gender representation is all stereotypes although some people try to go against stereotypes. Women are often sexualised in adverts and magazines and its seen to be normal, they are often seen to be the weaker and vulnerable as opposed to men being the stronger and more heroic ones.

Music Magazine Covers.

Monday 26th November
LO: To create a music magazine cover showing understanding of representation.
WWW: Good coverlines
EBI: More colour

Ive shown that is a pop magazine genre by using other famous pop artists in the coverlines. The way Millie is dressed is the type of clothes that would be used and is a representation of the artist. It links to the target audience because the age range is about 16-30 and the celebrities are around that age.
What I think went well: The picture in the background.
What I think I need to improve on:
  1. I need more colours to make it more pop genre.
  2. The coverlines font should be different from the masthead.
DIRT

I added more colour to make the genre more pop and changed the masthead font to a different one from the coverlines.  I also moved around some of the layers on it to make it more organised. The masthead was also put more onto the left like other magazines are.

Cover Analysis

Thursday 16th November
LO: To analyse the cover of a magazine, linking it to Genre and Audience.

Baby boomer Generation- People born after WW2- so like 50 to 70 years old.
Diversification- The notion media companies expanding and branching out into different areas of the media industry. Varying more.
Audience Address- Talking directly to the Audience
Discerning- Having or showing good judgement
House Style- A company preferred manner of presentation and layout of written material. Like the colour palette, using the same masthead.
Intertextuality: Where one text refers to another different piece of media within

Shot type: Mid shot

  • They used a mid shot so that they could frame their celebritys face with enough room for the coverlines. They also used a mid shot as opposed to a close up so the CD doesn't cover his face.

Star Vehicle: Dave Grohl

  • As its a Modern Rock magazine, they used a very popular and well know rock artist.

Colour Palette:Blue/Yellow/Red/White/Black

  • The bright colours used makes the magazine eye catching and stand out to buyers. As its modern they've used a more variety of colours whereas with a classic rock it would be more black and greys. The bright colours connote to pure and happy things which sets the mood. They follow the codes and conventions of the genre.

Bands/Artists Mentioned:Nirvana/Teen Spirit/Elvis

  • They use well known artists and bands to pull in the readers. If they didn't know who they were going to read about, its unlikely they'd want to buy it. Artists like Elvis are known worldwide.

Masthead Style: Block capitals/Sans serif

  • The Block Capitals and bold writing make their masthead stand out, the white contrasts well with the background. The sans serif font shows its pure rock as theres no flicks or ticks, it also makes it look more masculine.

Main Coverline style: Capitals
Minor coverline style: Lowercase
Puff: Red circle-yellow writing- 159 Reviews
USP (Freebies)-Free Cd
Placement of text- Around his face mainly

Magazine Ownership and Regulation

13/11/17
L/o: Research ownership, regulation and institutions involved in music magazines.

The main institutions  (big publishing companies) that publish and distribute magazines in the UK

IPC Media: Uncut, NME

Bauer Media: Q magazine, Mojo, The box, Magic, Downtown, Country, 4 Music

CondÄ— Nast: Pitchfork

Immediate Media: Radiotimes

Hearst: No music magazines

BBC: Music, Top of the Pops

Magazine companies generate magazines and make profit by Sales and advertising. They don't get much from single sale copies- when people buy the magazine from a shop. They earn more from subscriptions because they don't have to pay the shops to advertise and sell their magazine.
They make their money by advertising artists tours, products and subscriptions. People have to pay to put advertisements in the magazine and it costs a lot. This also fills the magazine to the maximum so it looks better therefore sells better. They are funded by subscriptions. The advertisement is linked to the target audience as the institution knows where to make their money.

Ownership:
Conglomerates: Big Owners
The majority of magazines are published by nine companies but their titles make up nearly 75% of the market. This means they have a massive influence over audiences and their companies will only get bigger as they control most of the market.

Media Regulation and Law:
There is a certain code of conduct for TV and Films. BBFC regulate the film- tell them who they can show it to like the age rating.

Who are Ipso and what do they do?
Ipso means Independent Press Standard Organisation. They are the independent regulator for the magazine and newspaper industry in the UK. They Regulate over 1500 print magazines and 1100 Online. They take complaints and investigate them. They help with unwanted press attention or harassment concerns. They give Editors and journalists guidance and advice about the editors code.

Who are Impress and what do they do?
Impress is a regulator designed for the future of Media. They provide journalists and publishers with the protection and the support they need to do their job and speak with confidence and security. We provide the public with the reassurance that they can rely on the news sources that inform them, entertain them and represent their interests.

What rules do magazines have to follow?
https://www.ipso.co.uk/editors-code-of-practice/

The future of the magazine:
In the past 20 years, the magazine industry has changed by going digital. For production this means its quicker. its faster and more efficient so it costs less, after the initial cost of the technology they have to buy, they'll need less building space, less print.
Its impacted that less real magazines are being produced, smaller, more independent companies can make just as good digital copies. I think in the future there will be no real magazines being made as the world of technology is constantly improving.

Genre and Target Audience

16th October
L/o: To identify target audiences for a variety of music magazines genre.

Target Audience
Demographics:
I think the genre of this magazine is combined and Indie alternative genres to do with fashion films and entertainment. The age range is from 15-25. I think its more directed to females due to the fact that the main picture is of a girl. Also the colours are quite vibrant and bright. The nationality is British and I think the readers are A,B,C1 Class because of the Price. I think Clash has got a mass audience because the celebrities used are quite popular in this magazine and others.

Psychographics:
Employment status: Medium Income
Young and Rubicam: The succeeder - People who possess self confidence, have a strong goal of orientation and tend to be very organised.
Lifestyle category: Groupies- People who want to be accepted by the people around them.
Innovators- People who want to make their mark on the world.
Social value group: Innovators: Self confident risk takers, seeking new and different things, setting their own targets to achieve.

Thursday 2nd November
L/O:  To identify target audiences for a variety of music magazine genres

Demographics:
I think the genre could be pop because the celebrity featured is Calvin Harris who sings forms of Pop and also produces the songs. I think the age range is for Teens and Young adults like ages 16-25. I think it is aimed at Females because of the bright colours used like pink, yellow and white but using a male celebrity could also suggest that its aimed at Males. The nationality is British and i think Class A,B,C1 because of the price and contents.

Psychographics:
Employment status: Medium Income
Young and Rubicam: The Mainstream
Lifestyle category: Innovators
Social value group: Esteem Seekers

Demographics:
The genre of this magazine is definitely Rock, I know this because it says it and also the hints like the black and dark yellow colours. The skulls and symbols suggest it aswell as the bands/artists listed. I think the age range is adults like 24-35. I think its aimed at Males as the celebrity used is a male. I think its class C2,D,E.

Psychographics:
Employment status: Medium Income
Young and Rubicam: The explorer
Lifestyle category: Drifters and Rebels
Social value group: Innovators

Demographics:
The genre of this magazine is Rock, although I think its linked to pop because of the brighter colours used. Kerrang is a Rock magazine but uses less gothic colours like Hammer. I think the age range is around 16-24, the gender is more aimed at Males and its ethnicity is British. I think the class is C2,D,E because there is 10 posters inside meaning theres not much writing or articles included.

Psychographics:
Employment status: Medium Income
Young and Rubicam: The Aspirer
Lifestyle category: Groupies
Social value group:Strivers

Demographics:
This magazine is a pop magazine, i know this because its in the title and you can tell because of the artists used and the bright colours. I think the age range is from 15-20 and its directed at females. The Ethnicity is British and i think the class is lower like C2,D,E because of the price at only £1. Theres probably not very long articles because its quite a cheap magazine.

Psychographics:
Employment status: Low Income
Young and Rubicam: The aspirer
Lifestyle category: Traditionalists
Social value group: Self actualisers

Magazine Cover Terminology, Layout and Analysis

2/10/17

  1. Mojo means a quality that attracts people to you and makes you successful and full of energy. This could mean that they think the quality of their magazine attracts people. It also means a magic spell. The billboard masthead means a large outdoor board that displays advertisements. Billboard also means charts in American which links to the music charts.
  2. They are laid out across the top in big writing with the celebrity's heads covering part of the word.
  3. The date, the name of the magazine, the name of the celebrity featured, the subheadings and the price of the magazine.
  4. In the mojo magazine I think the main headline is "The songs that saved his life Nirvana" In the billboard magazine there isn't a main headline because they're all the same size. That headline appeals to the target audience because everyone knows who David Grohl is so they would want to read about him. They also know he's from Foo Fighters so people can identify the genre.
  5.  In the Mojo magazine the types of coverlines are about rock artists and the ones in billboard are about pop artists like Taylor swift.
  6. In the mojo magazine the fonts are quite masculine, its all a sans serif font. The billboard magazine fonts are quite feminine, a serif font is used on the words katy perry for example.
  7. The graphics used are the pictures of the celebrities and the teen spirit one in the mojo magazine.
  8. The colours used are quite gender specific, In the mojo magazine, its quite masculine, blue and black colours. In the Billboard magazine its quite girly colours used like pink and yellow for the flowers and a pink background.
  9. There is more text on the mojo magazine, theres loads of coverlines and subtitles. This might be because rock appeals to an older target audience and they would prefer to read more. On the Billboard magazine theres not much writing and its all quite small. As its a pop magazine, the target audience is younger people so they wouldn't want as much writing and want more posters etc.
  10. On the Mojo magazine there is pictures of the celebrities. The non verbal communication is like the facial expressions, Dave Grohl looks quite moody but Katy perry looks more happier, I think this is because pop music is more upbeat and happy etc.
  11. The Mojo magazine is giving away a free CD maybe to promote the music and help sell the magazine.
  12. Theres no menu strip in either magazine, the menu strip is normally at the bottom and tells the reader a rough idea of whats included.
  13. In Mojo the genre is more rock and in Billboard the genre is pop music.
  14. Mojo I think appeals more to men because of the genre and colours used and Billboard is directed more to women because of the colours, the celebrity featured and the genre.
  15. Magazines appeal to their readers by writing what they want to read so the cover lines, they also appeal by the celebrities used and the look and layout of the cover.
  16. In mojo I think the unique selling point is the freebie it comes with and in Billboard the layout of the front.

The Music Industry

L/O: To identify and explain different music genres

List music genres:

  • Rock
  • Pop
  • Rap
  • Street
  • Hip Hop
  • Heavy metal
  • Country
  • Western
  • Opera
  • Electronica
  • Grime
  • Hollywood
  • RnB
  • Dance

Rock:
Rock artists tend to wear black clothes, ripped jeans and t shirts and leather jackets and shirts. They also sometimes have long hair. They are mostly male, like foo fighters. I think rock music singers are very loud, they use heavy guitars and drums. The themes are sometimes about social issues like drugs. Rock singers are mainly male bands so when they do sing about love and relationships, its from a male point of view.

Pop:
Pop artists mainly wear colourful clothing, for women mainly skirts and dresses and curled hair but men are more laid back and just wear like shirts and jeans. Pop artists tend to sing about relationships and most songs sound around the same, they're like a middle speed and the instruments they use are guitars bass and pianos.

Rap:
Rap artists  males wear baggy clothes, gold chains, hats and sunglasses and the women tend to wear more tighter clothes like leggings and shirts. The music is always fast paced. They sing about random stuff from social issues and relationships.

RnB:
RnB  stands of rhythm and blue. The artists are mainly women and mostly wear crop tops, baggy trousers or short outfits. They sometimes sing fast and sometimes normal speed, the songs are quite up beat most the time. They sing about lifestyle or relationships.

Dance:
Dance artists wear a lot of shorts tops and small shorts. The outfits are fairly colourful and vibrant. The music is a variety of speeds and volume and they also sing about a range of subjects.

14/09/17
L/O: To identify and classify audiences.

Rock:

  1. Who is the target audience?                                                                                                     Young adults are normally the people that listen to rock like 16-25 year old white causasions. Stereotypically, mostly men like rock music but some women do as well. According to theorists Blumer and Katz, people listen to this type of music for personal identity-feeling like you fit in because you identify with stereotypes.
  2. Which magazines and radio stations feature this genre?                                                   Magazines include Classic rock and Kerrang. A Rock radio station for example is planet rock.
  3. Photos of Rock bands and links to music videos.

Link to Muse video:

Pop:
  1. Who is the target audience?                                                                                                        Mostly teenagers to middle aged adults. Middle class families. Mixed genders listen as the artists go from either Male or Female individuals or groups. In theory, I think that people listen to pop music for either diversion or personal relationships as the songs are usually quite relatable meaning you can use it to get away from everyday life. Its also for personal identity and many people like to imitate their singer idols.
  2. Which magazines and radio stations feature this genre?                                                                 Magazine examples could be billboard or top pops. Pop music is always shown in the top 40s.
  3. Photos of Pop bands and singers and links to music videos.

Rap:

  1. Who is the target audience?                                                                                                            I think rap music appeals to 15-30 year olds, not too young or old. white middle class are the majority of listeners. 60 and more for males than females. In theory, I think people listen to this type of music for diversion from everyday life and personal identity.
  2. Which magazines and radio stations feature his genre? Rap music magazines for example could be Vibe and Source. Radio stations such as hip hop radio play rap music.

Analysis of moving image

Analysis of Moving Image22/05/17

L/o: To analyse a trailer effectively using the key concepts.

Film: 47 Metres down

Link: https://trailers.apple.com/trailers/independent/47-meters-down/

Genre: The genre is Horror. I can tell this because there is blood and dark waters/ low key lighting and the sharks look vicious and scary. There is also creepy background music.

Types of shot:
  • There is close up shots to really show the fear on the girls faces as they fall down.

  • There is the bird eye view to see the sharks underneath the cage. It makes you see                   what the people see when they look down.

  • A long shot is used to show the size of the shark compared to the human.

Editing has been used to make to film more exciting. . Near the end of the trailer the camera takes loads of different shots to show everything happening. Its all really quick paced. The setting is all bright at the start and then by the end its all dark.

Sound is used for effect by using diegetic and non diegetic. For most of the trailer there is non diegetic suspenseful music. There is also sounds that the characters will hear but they are emphasised, for example, the sound of the rope snapping.

Mise en scene: I can tell that the characters are scared from their facial expressions. They look quite girly as they are both dressed up at the start of the film, and you can tell that one of the girls didn't want to do it because she had to be persuaded. The setting is quite a hot country and the actual shark trip seems quite dodgy to start with as the boat is quite dirty and the cage is rusty.

Lighting and Colour: The lighting is high key at the start which kind of tricks you into thinking its going to be  a nice film but by the end its very low key lighting to represent the horror genre.  The colours used is mainly red (Blood and lights) and dark blur/Black.

Sound

L/o: To understand how and why sound is used in film.
15/05/17

All sound used in film is known as the soundtrack. It is broken down into the following categories.

  • Diegetic sound- As a character in the film you would expect to hear these sounds (people talking, cars outside)
  • Non-Diegetic sounds- Anything that the characters wouldn't hear (narration, music)
Task 1:
Diegetic sounds in the film-
  • Breathing
  • Footsteps
  • The fire
  • Wings
  • Key in the lock
  • Fingers tapping on table
  • Eating the fairies
  • Standing up
  • Swiping the fairies
  • Plate on table

Editing

24/04/17
L/O: Understand how the editing of different shots can create and change the meaning of a scene or film.

EDITING:

- Editing is selecting, combining and ordering shots to add meaning and continuity.

Elements of editing:

- Cutting
- Transitions
- Pace and Length of the shot
- Rhythm
- CGI (Computer Generated Images) & Animation

Cutting - In joining one shot to another, an editor can use many different cuts.
Cutting on action - (Match on Action) - A cut that follows whatever is happening in the scene.
Cutaway - Use the cutaway to get inside the head of a character, insert shot.
Cross Cutting (Parallel Editing) - Intercuts in-between locations, or two different scenes which are supposed to be happening at the same time. Also used to show whats going on inside the characters head.
Straight Cut - A basic cut from one scene to another with no transitions.
Jump Cut - Several cuts between the same shot. Also used to add a level of urgency. Shows time passing by.
Match Cut (Graphic Match) - Cuts from one shot to a similar shot by matching the action or composition.
Eye line Match - When it cuts between someone looking at something to what they're looking at.
Shot reverse shot - Used to show conversation or dialogue between two or more people.
Transitions -
Fade in / Fade out - Fade in or out to black or white, Suggests time has passed.
Dissolve - Often shows time passing, but normally to connect two scenes.
Wipe - To show it moves between scenes more, theres a definite change of place.

Mise-En-Scene

04/04/17

  • Mise-En-Scene is a French term meaning what is put into a scene or frame.
  • Visual information in front of a camera.
  • Communicates essential information to the audience.
  • Made up of five different elements:
  1. Setting and Props
  2. Costume, Hair and Makeup
  3. Facial expressions and Body Language
  4. Lighting and Colour
  5. Position of Characters and objects within the frame
Setting and Props:
Setting and Locations play an important part in film making and are not just 'backgrounds'
Sets are either built from scratch or a great deal of time is spent to find a setting which already exists.
Settings can manipulate an audience by building certain expectations and then taking a different turn.

What settings and Props would you find in:
  • Sci-fi: Space, Lab, Futuristic weapons, technology
  • Romantic comedy:Everyday locations, flowers, room
  • Horror: Dark rooms, a weapon
Costume, Hair, Makeup:
Acts as an instant indicate to us of a characters personality.
  • Businessman
  • Strict
  • Boring
  • Everything about work
  • Could be a lawyer
  • Smart
Facial Expressions and Body Language:
Provide a clear indicator of how someone is feeling.

Positioning of characters and objects within a friend:

Lighting and Colour
Can be used to achieve a variety of effects
Types of lighting:

  • Low key lighting- deep, distinct shadows/silhouettes are formed (Horror)
  • High key lighting-Produce brightly lit sets or a sunny day (Rom Com)
The scene looks like an action film because it has a big boat and loads of people. The location is like a deserted island with a big jungle and loads of rocks. It uses high key lighting as its a sunny day.

This is a scene from Gossip Girl. You can tell just from the costumes with the suits and the nice clothes that they are rich and stylish. Their facial expressions are neutral and give the impression that they are quite serious. The girl on the left looks quite girly with her skirt and her bag and the one in the middle has quite a gothic look. She has a sly smile on her face. The two guys at the end look like business men that are smartly dressed whereas the guy in-between the girls looks like a more laid back character.

The Setting and Props show how wealthy they are, they have a tidy and large home with big windows. The location is the upper east side of New York. The props are expensive, huge bouquets of flowers. The lighting is light which shows its not a horror programme, its a drama.

We are here to talk about 13 year old Siam Juntakereket. He is on his way cycling the 2,184 miles across Australia, and is almost halfway through his journey. 816 miles done to be exact. He is cycling Sydney to Perth in conditions of blazing heat, humidity and swarms of flies. He is trying to beat the record of 44 days made by a young 11 year old and is aiming to take only 32. This means he will be cycling about 90-100 miles per day. He is raising money for three great charities: Cornwall community foundation, ROC and comic relief. Siam began the cycle on the 2nd of March and is aiming to finish around the start of April. Siam has been constantly training everyday with the support of his family and friends, and we wish him the best of luck.
